All MacLellan chanters are made on modern CNC equipment. The bore, throat, & reed seat sizes give a rich, stable tone with excellent harmonics throughout the scale. When properly set up, these chanters will pitch at approximately 476hz for solo and 480hz, for the band chanters*. The full range
of drone harmonics gives a clear projection for more volume and a broad sound. All MacLellan chanters have threaded reed seats for ease of fine tuning adjustments.
Solo Chanter
The solo chanter is available in African Blackwood only and has a sweet sound which less voluminous than the band chanter.
Band Chanter
The band chanter is available in Blackwood or Delrin and has a more robust voluminous sound. The bore of the band chanter has a steeper taper and the finger holes are larger than the solo chanter. The reed seats are threaded making fine tuning adjustments easy. The pitch of the band chanter is ideal for North America, where the warmer summers make higher pitch chanters unstable and thin on the the top hand.
Big Band Chanter
Featuring a bigger throat and threaded reed seat area than the standard band chanter. A medium or hard reed is required to get the maximum power of this chanter. The reward is a rich and full sound with a strong and stable top hand. The power and harmonics it produces are incredible.
Specially Pitched Chanter
Delrin chanters pitch at 466 Bb or 440 A. These chanters are designed for playing with other instruments and tune accordingly. Concert A 440 will require some work on drone reeds to get the bagpipe in tune at that pitch.
