The Apps G3 bagpipe chanter reed is cut with a CNC mill and hand finished by Chris Apps. The technology ensures uniformity while the hand finish guarantees quality. The folded brass staple ensures each reed has a powerful, stable top hand and projects plenty of volume. This staple is also key to our perfect piobaireachd high G. The G3 reed produces a sound with plenty of depth and harmonics. We can set strength to exact specification if requested.

Molded Reeds Set to Exact Strength
Let us match the G3 chanter reeds you order to your specific strength requirement. Chris uses the pressure gauge to set the strength of the reed exactly. The strength setting is marked on the reed. Even if you do not own a guage you can choose a setting from the strength table at the bottom of this page and we will send a G3 chanter reed set to your specified strength. The next time you order a G3 chanter reed you can ask for the same strength or something slightly different. (*Note: not available for the G4 chanter reed)

G4 ridge-cut reed
Ridge-cut Reeds
The ridge cut reed has been developed to cater primarily for pipe bands. The G4 pitches slightly higher than the G3 reed and is available in medium and hard strengths. Compared to the G3 this reed is more forgiving with pitches versus pressure making band setup easier. Manufactured with the same state of the art equipment as the G3 with a folded brass staple. This reed produces a very crisp bright tone throughout the scale and a clear strong high A without a heavy crow. It works well in all the common brands of band chanter.

The Wika gauge will allow you to find your ideal reed strength. Then let us match the G3 chanter reeds you order to your specifications.This gauge slips over the end of your pipe chanter. Just blow through it to make the reed sound and take a reading from the dial. Measurements in inches of water.
